Know Jesus?
"But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD." (emphasis added) — Jer 9:24
Recently, the Spirit had me search my heart regarding the “know” of this verse, prompting me to ask: how well do YOU actually knoweth God? Surely you will agree that intimately knowing Jesus is of crucial importance to every Christian. So, how well do you and I really know Him?
It’s easy to think we knoweth Him by reading the Bible’s red print and gathering information about Jesus. But to truly knoweth Him requires having a dynamic personal relationship. This implies a moment-to-moment interactive fellowship which invites Him into every arena of our life. It’s fully entrusting ourselves to His written Word and indwelling Spirit; it’s being committed to obey His commands. Scripture declares that obedience is the sure proof of our knowing and loving Him and is possible only through our faith-choice to surrender to His Word and walk in the mighty enabling power of the Holy Spirit. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. "... Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him" — 1Jo 2:3,4,23; Jn 14:23. Oh, Lord how we want this!
Joseph Stowell, in Simply Jesus, details the necessary commitment: “This is the pattern we are to follow in our lives if we are to know Jesus. An undaunted and nonnegotiable loyalty to Jesus — regardless of the cost — is the key to a deepening intimate fellowship with Him. Regardless of what He requires, those who want to draw close to Him meet Him at that sweat and blood-stained rock in the Garden and brokenly repeat His words after Him: ‘Not my will, but Yours be done’.” (pps 80, 81)
May our deepest, unwavering and fervent prayer come from a heart like Paul’s: "my determined purpose is that I may know Him, perceiving and recognizing and understand (the wonders of His Person) more strongly and more clearly. And that I may in that same way come to know the power outflowing from His resurrection (which it exerts over believers); and that I may so share His sufferings as to be continually transformed (in spirit into His likeness) even to His death" — Php 3:10 AB. A-men! — D.
