Way of Humble
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus ... he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death." — Philippians 2:5,8
This is a call of the Spirit to every believer and foundational to living the Spirit-filled life. It’s the way of humble. Apart from it, we cannot live the obedient lifestyle our Lord calls us to in Christ Jesus (Eph 2:10). It, being the heart-set of those who truly live by faith and whose lives give evidence of the death and resurrection power of our Lord and Savior.
Jesus passionately exhorts us to learn and live in humble obedience; to give our minds and hearts fully over to Him. In Matthew 11:29 and 30 He pleads: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." He delights in our coming under His yoke; allowing Him bear the burden of our weaknesses and sins; giving Him permission to empower us to walk as He did while on earth. By His Word and Spirit, He offers Himself to us freely, to teach us the way of humble.
But note the first word of our text: “Let.” It’s the crux of the matter. Will we let (surrender, yield, allow, permit) HIS thoughts, desires, feelings and purposes replace, govern and control our own? We are so conditioned to following our own ways; being in control; submitting to no one unless we are forced to. But Jesus wants to teach us His way; a humble, selfless, righteous and holy way of life ... one motivated by His love for us (Gal 2:20). Yes, there’s suffering in dying to our old sinful ways of thinking and acting. But, for certain, there is incomparable reward of God’s intimate fellowship and revealed glory awaiting the humbly willing. Its joy makes every pain of suffering miniscule by comparison (2Co 4:17; Jn 14:16-23). Understand that we are "always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh" — 2Co 4:10,11.
Letting the humble mind of Christ animate our lives is the only way to progress from merely being Spirit-indwelt to being Spirit-filled. "For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." — Is 57:15. Yes; let us “let”! — D.
