Followers?

Remember the childhood game of “follow the leader”?  We kids would form a line behind someone, then follow and imitate whatever he or she initiated.  As the game progressed and the tempo picked up, some tired and dropped out, others would be eliminated for non-compliance, while still others never joined in.  Only a few persevered to the end.

er: the Spirit.  But, like those children, some don’t, others drop out and scripture reminds, only a few overcome ‘til the end.  As members of God’s family, He is our divinely provided, life-long leader; the One we’re to adoringly and obediently follow.  "For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations" — Ps 22:28.  Unlike that children’s game where a schoolmate sets the example and pace, the Holy Spirit is almighty, all-wise, loving, righteous, just and holy; the perfect Leader.  Because He is GOD!  And He lives within us, ever ready to lead, counsel, teach, empower, correct and bless.  Let this truth soak in: "For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls" — 1Pet 2:25.  Jesus declared: "when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth" — Jn 16:13a ... ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you — Jn 14:17.  Well, the Spirit has come and He does indwell YOU as a Christian (Acts 2:1-4; 1Cor 3:16).  Prophets might us envy as angels rejoice!

While in the wilderness, God guided the Israelites "with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night" — Ps 78:14.  While leading them from the land of bondage to one of promise, He protected, fed and enabled.  The unchangeable Spirit stands ready to do the same for us, every day of our life; but ... we need to follow (Heb 13:;8; Ja 1:17).  For sure, the promise stands for all who live by faith: "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.  But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive" (Jn 7:38-39).

We can follow Him with total trust, even if it makes no natural sense because the Spirit’s inerrant, enabling leadership is always in agreement with God’s Word.  Ever our faithful Guide, He assures us all: I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: "I will guide thee with mine eye — Ps 32:8.  And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left" — Is 30:21.  Dear one, there is only one sure way to go; the way of God, of the Holy Spirit.  Let’s follow HIM, our divine Leader!  — D.
