Connections
Today’s world offers so many ways to connect with one another: phone, fax, computer, palm devices, texting, etc. It seems that it would have us wired up and available every moment of the day ... nighttime too. Great for emergencies. But, this convenient blessing has a spiritual downside too. All those voices vying for attention can crowd out the most important: our heavenly Father’s. It’s even possible for all this “horizontal” activity to draw us away from God and back into our old ways. Dialoguing with Him can get relegated to a few minutes a day; even none. As you well know, communication is essential to building and maintaining our earthly relationships. So it is between us and our Lord.
Insufficient Father dialogue can also make us more vulnerable to the enemy of our souls. "The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him" (Ps 37:32). We should take this warning seriously and be alert to the ways of our spiritual enemy. He is ever seeking "... to steal, and to kill, and to destroy" (Jn 10:10a). "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world" (1Pet 5:8,9).
God has provided supernatural connections to Himself by way of the Bible and His Spirit; one in our hands, the other in our heart (He also inhabits our praises). He guarantees privileged access through Christ and wants us to stay in touch. Scripture exhorts: "Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore" (Psalm 105:4). We’re told to share our joys, sorrows, weaknesses and sin; to confess and receive forgiveness. He promises to provide wisdom, comfort, protection, love, joy, peace, healing, restoration, guidance, etc. He delights in our thanksgivings, worship and close fellowship: "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee" (Jer 31:3. When we call upon Him, He promises: "I will answer" (Ps 91:15, see Rom 10:13). He indeed should be our supreme connection.
An early morning time of Bible study, worship and prayer has been the norm for sound Christian living ... imperative in these wired-up days of tumult and uncertainty. Making the adjustments to accommodate Him first thing can pay big dividends during the day. It helps assure our heavenly connection remains the most vital, especially in the midst of demands and problems. Talk to Him often and openly, joyously and lavishly praise Him throughout the day (Ps 34:1). THAT connection is for eternity! — D.
