True Worship

"O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.  For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand." —?Ps 95:6,7a

The Bible abounds with scripture concerning a believer’s worship of God and reveals the wondrous intimacy true worship can bring between man and his Maker.  David’s Psalms reflect his deep and abiding love relationship with God and serve as inspiring examples for us all.

David’s fervor flowed from his knowing and trusting God as his all encompassing Supplier of whatever life required.  He saw Him as faithful, loving, merciful, just, wise and an ever-present help.  God was his Protector and Provider for every need — a mighty Savior who never failed him.  He ever hungered for and sought after God’s presence.  He yearned to understand His divine thinking and ways; to experience the wondrous glory and power of His presence.  "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple ... Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore" (Ps 27:4Ps 16:11).  Worshipping God in good times and bad, David’s life and writings portray a monogamous and fervent love for His Creator.  Recall, God delighted in David as a man after His own heart.

However, many believers (unwittingly) engage in adulterous worship of false gods; of idols — and thereby lose immeasurably.  For "... they that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them" (Ps 115:8).  Overlooked is the fact that man-made gods or idols are impotent; they have no power and impart no life.  They’re products of man and unlike the living God, are powerless to redeem, save, protect or deliver — nor can they help, heal, empower, bless, impart wisdom or restore.  Deadly foolishness!

We need to ask ourselves: “What am I worshiping?” Materialism?  A loved one?  Self?  Sports?  Pleasures of this life?  God’s gifts?  The Spirit would have us search our hearts and excise anything that hinders our seeking and worshiping the one and only true God.  I pray our hearts cry out in unison with David’s: "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God ... We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool" (Ps. 84:2;132:7). — D.
