Come Away!

“Come away... to the garden of the Lord...and walk with Me” — go the lyrics of a beautiful song I often listen to in the early morning.  They remind me how much God longs for each of us to spend time with Him.  He wants us to come away from our busy, often overloaded minds and schedules — even from our loved ones, to commune alone with Him through His Word and prayer.  Whether in predawn quiet, a mid-day respite or an extended time, there is no equal in relationship.  There is no other Who can fill us with that which “fires” our hearts into passionate commitment to Him and His kingdom service.

There are mornings I get up, but my mind doesn’t!  Perhaps it does but it’s like an unmade bed — a jumble of thoughts; remnants from the night’s dreams mixed with nagging memories of things undone, plus those still before me.  Daytimes, my mind is sometimes like a scorching wilderness; empty, hostile, nothing cool to drink; no respite or shade from the heat of stressful circumstances or responsibilities —  N-O-T-H-I-N-G!   Like the O.T. Israelites wandering in the wilderness, I murmur and grumble, forgetting that God is my Saviour, instead of giving Him thanks and praise for His mercy, grace and blessings.  At those times I really need to “Come away”.

“Come away with Me” expresses the longing heart of God for you and I to frequently and lavishly put our lives on hold to fellowship with Him.  We see this all through the Bible.  The fire of His love desires to consume us as we present ourselves for fellowship and worship.  He longs to fill us with Himself, conforming us to the righteous love creatures He’s already made us  to be — in Christ Jesus (1Jn 3:1a; 2Cor 5:17; Eph 2:10; 4:24).

Alone with God, we find His power and passion inflaming us with increased desire for Him and for doing His will.  Love does that!  As our grasp of His love and wisdom grows, faith deepens and is able to pray and believe Him at His Word for the seeming impossible.  Secure in His love, we can let His strong, yet gentle arms enfold, protect and empower us to walk in the Spirit.  During these times of holy intimacy, He often shares with His beloved, His covenant secrets; His will and awesome wisdom.  Whispering to our hearts, He tells us we’re His delight.  Yes, come away to that secret place of His presence where love’s communion births in us Christ’s own passion.  Yes, in the heat of the day’s circumstances, let’s eagerly “Come away...” (Jn 4:23; Rom 14:17, 5:12; Ps 27:4-6,8; Lk 17:21; Mt 6:33).  — D.
