HIS Way of Life

Living God’s Way

Crossroads!  So many crossroads in our lives; every hour, every day.  Some we face without a clue as to which way to go — many leading to dead-end roads of frustration, pain and failure.  As a new Christian, I stood at such an intersection in my equally new marriage.  My unrenewed mind knew little of God’s ways concerning wives and marriage, and nothing about Satan’s deception and influence on my thought life — or of "the "law of sin and death" resident in my flesh (Rom 7).  I was ruled by painful, unhappy thoughts and ruinous ways.  Disappointed in what seemed a colossal failure of a relationship, I decided to end our marriage.  Praise God for His faithful love, my husband’s prayers and those of others!  His Spirit intervened and moved on our hurting hearts — until one morning I prayed: “Lord, I don’t want to live with this man anymore, but lead me in the ways of righteousness.”  God answered those prayers and has continued to strengthen and teach us how to live His way.  We’re now blessed with a 27-year marriage, full of increasing meaning and Godly purpose.

Little did I know I’d prayed like David of the Bible:  "Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face" — Ps 5:8.  How wondrous is our Lord’s leading and keeping.  God assures His children of His ever-present guidance and power to walk His way "... he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever ... the Spirit of truth ... he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you" — Jn 14:16-18.  "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost ... he shall teach you all things" — Jn 14:26.  "He, the Spirit of truth ... will guide you into all truth" — Jn 16:13.  God has surely well-equipped us for every trial and temptation (2Tim 1:7).

Every new believer is reborn spiritually, gifted with God’s indwelling Holy Spirit and imputed with Jesus’ righteous (Ephes 4:24; 2Cor 5:17).  Our loving God then calls us to live out our time on earth His way — the way of life, love, peace and joy (Rom 8:6,13).  Those blessings are granted in return for surrendering our will to His (Jn 7:37-39a; Ephes 1:3; Gal 2:20; Acts 17:28).  We can so live only by faith and our moment-to-moment choosing to submit (Rom 6:1-16).  At each intersection of His way and ours, it’s our humble, “Your will be done, Lord” choices that open His floodgate of grace to live out those right decisions (Heb 4:14-16; 1Cor 12:9,10; 1Pet 5:5-11).  Oh, rejoice with me and "give thanks always ... because God from the beginning chose (us) for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth ... for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Thess 2:13,14).  Hallelujah! — D.
