Let Us Behold Him
He that transforms
It is said in Proverbs 23:7a that as one "thinketh in his heart, so is he." We all know how true that is. How and what we think finds its outworking in every aspect of our lives; in our relationships with others — even with God. Our self image is shaped by how we think about ourselves. In short, as we think, so will we be and do.
A significant example of this principle is seen in Numbers 13:33 when certain Israelite men were sent to spy out the land of Canaan: "And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight." They saw themselves as “grasshoppers” and already defeated. Somehow they left God out of the equation in their thinking as they faced their enemies.
How often do we Christians think this way? In spite of God having given us "a spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (2Tim 1:7; 1Cor 2:16b) to empower and guide us, we often see ourselves as “grasshoppers”. So we speak and act accordingly. Faced with the weakness of our flesh, temptation to sin, and seemingly overwhelming circumstances (and/or other people), we can feel so small and helpless. And so we are ... if our minds remain unrenewed on God’s Word and we’ve not embraced our victorious strength in Christ and our new image which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness — Eph 4:24b. (See 2Tim 2:1; Mt 7:24-25; Ja 1:21-25)
A very important key to changing our “grasshopper” self-image is found in a Scripture that lovingly commands us to keep looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith — Heb 12:2a. Another verse speaks of the transforming power of beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord ... (and so) are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord — 2Cor 3:18. This bespeaks a progressive change of thinking and conduct — from “glory to glory.” As we faithfully keep our eyes on Him, our “buggy” outlook will give way to our God-given glorification in Christ.
So, let us behold our precious Lord Jesus each day with spiritual eyes, ears and hearts — all He has done for us and yet does. All that He is! Let us seek to behold and believe in Him; to desire above all else to know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death — Phil 3:8-10. In this love union with Christ, every “grasshopper” will be transformed into His likeness. And others will see the true witness of our victorious King in the earth! — D.
