More Energy?

— Health from a biblical perspective —
Dear Friend,
Know of anyone who seems to always be just dragging themselves around, looking limp as a dish rag and wearing a hang-dog expression? Rather than a criticism, that’s a telling description of how many characterize themselves. To remedy their plight, some resort to using energy stimulants. The sad truth is, that although these can give temporary relief, inherently none of them can provide the HEALTHY energy needed. In fact, all diminish vitality.
In this article we provide simple things that anybody can do without medications, supplements, special diets, etc. They amount to just tweeking your present diet to gain more energy from it. We’re certain you’ll be thrilled with the results and encourage you to test these proven principles for yourself. You’ve everything to gain!
More Energy?
An easy way
Do you spring out of bed in the morning, bristling with energy — or do you drag a reluctant body to the coffee pot? At the end of a work day, are you still energized and eager to play with the kids, tackle a project, a favorite hobby — or do you crawl from the dinner table and collapse on the couch? Do you go through the week, praying for the week-end so that you can rest up? Are you like many — chronically tired?
Many people we meet seem to be experiencing a personal energy crisis and would like to have more vitality. It’s evidenced by the shear quantity of “uppers” popped, swigged, gulped or smoked every day. Americans routinely resort to a host of (legal) stimulants in an effort to up their energy level. It could be said that energy is like love: it makes the world go round, but most people are looking for it in all the wrong places.
Two Approaches
There are two simple ways to gain more “legitimate” energy. 1) Put more into the body and, 2) better utilize the energy you have; not mutually exclusive. In that we often write about the first, let’s focus on the second — better utilization.
Perhaps you’ve not studied the connection between diet, energy and health. Our energy comes mostly from food and every metabolic activity is energy dependent. If one suffers from an energy shortage, certain needful things simply don’t get done or are not fully accomplished. Long term, this shortage poses a serious threat to one’s health. Example:
Detoxification
If you’re not familiar with this term as applied to the body, it refers to its ongoing function of excreting substances poisonous to itself: those ingested with food, water, beverages and all medications. Also, those injected and inhaled. Consider those that gain access though the lungs and skin. There are air pollutants bombarding us with each and every breath; morning, noon and night. Think about all the chemical recipes the average woman religiously massages into her pores. Then there’s the intentional imbibing of poisons: all drugs, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and food additives. Additionally, there’s the normal metabolic debris produced by the body’s 100 trillion living cells as they go about their 24/7 business. All of it must regularly be removed to keep the body clean, healthy and at its proper weight. Toxic accumulations add unhealthy weight and are a breeding ground for all manner of sickness, disease and mischief.
Here’s the point:
Detoxification requires energy.
Moreover, the more toxic our diet and lifestyle — the more energy is needed.
One with an impaired detox function has, or will have impaired health. Some of the resultant issues have immediate symptoms while others take decades to manifest (namely the more debilitating and life-threatening ones such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, etc.). Bad breath, body odor, pimples and overweight are merely four of the more obvious clues of a toxic body; a body whose detox function is under-energized.
Digestion
This is the body’s largest energy consuming function, estimated to require 80% of its entire supply. Since most people suffer from impaired digestion, a great opportunity exists to free-up energy, which then automatically goes to the lymphatic system’s detox function. A simple thing can be done that’s non-medicinal, healthful, costs no more than you’re now paying and is entirely within your control. Moreover, you don’t have to give up any of your favorite, (quality) foods. Here it is: eat foods easier to digest. It’s actually that simple! Here are some ways to implement this health principle; embrace as many as you can.
Eat “Live” Foods
Having previously written on this, we refer you to past articles. Suffice it to say, live means produce which is fresh, whole, ripe, raw, unprocessed in any way, and if possible — organically grown. The prime reason is, “live” food comes equipped with the enzymes required to digest itself. This frees the body from the enormous, life-shortening chore of always having to redirect energy to create extra digestive enzymes.
Eat simple foods
“Simple” means, foods easiest to digest; those requiring the least amount of energy to reduce them to a liquid needed by the small intestine to extract the nutrients. These foods must also supply the balance of nutrients required to maintain good health. Fresh fruit and veggies immediately come to mind, and of the two, fruit is the easiest to digest. In fact, unlike any other solid food, it scoots right though the stomach in less than 30 minutes and is digested in the small intestine. Fruits are very positive energy foods, meaning, after subtracting the energy required for their digestion, a major portion remains for health purposes. Many non-starchy veggies are also very easy to digest with the darkest green, leafy ones being the most nutrient-dense. Go for the juiciest of both unprocessed fruit and vegetables.
Eat single foods
“Mono-meals” are an extremely fine way to free up loads of digestive energy. This is simply the practice of eating only one food at a time. I realize it might sound strange, perhaps even unhealthful to the uninitiated. It’s anything but! A mono meal’s claim to fame is that it places a minimal demand on the digestive process — freeing up more energy for health and weight control. Use them like this: periodically, instead of having a meal of more digestive demanding, mixed foods — try one comprised of a single (mono) food; say watermelon. Yes! you can healthfully eat an entire meal of just, juicy, deliciously sweet watermelon — or any other kind of melon. You can even mix-n-match them and still be “mono-ing” Caution: never mix melon with anything else. "Eat it alone or leave it alone!"
You can do the same with tomatoes, corn, peaches, apples, or for that matter, any single fruit or veggie that appeals to you. Just make sure you eat enough to feel completely satisfied, without overeating.
Eat wise combinations
One of the cardinal rules of food combining is: don’t eat protein and starch in the same meal. To digest protein requires acid while alkaline enzymes are needed for starch. If both arrive in the stomach at the same time, the two digestive agents neutralize one-another. The net result is incomplete indigestion. Bad enough, but the body continues trying to digest these polar opposites for hours before finally shuttling the putrefying and fermenting, partially digested mess, to the intestine. Unfortunately, it cannot assimilate well — the rotting, undigested food. So the whole enterprise is a loss!
The greater loss is the energy consumed in trying to deal with it all. Examples of such poor combinations are: Meat and potatoes, fish and rice, chicken and noodles, cereal and milk, eggs and toast, etc. Hey; you don’t have to give them up — just separate them! If you’re going to have steak, substitute some steamed veggies and a salad for the spud.
Eat at the right time
From 4 AM until noon, when your body is in its “elimination” mode, consume only juicy fruit and fresh fruit juices. From noon until 8 PM when it’s in the “appropriation” part of the metabolic cycle — that’s the time to fuel up with the heavier foods. More on this next time.
Should you be so bold as to embrace all of these principles of good health, you will be staggered at the increase in your energy — and resultant weight loss. Needless to say, your health will progressively get better. We’re certain you’ll be pleased!

Our first order of TopGreen™ came today and we are very pleased with the taste and texture of the product. We had bought another green product back in the early spring ... and found it very unpleasant to take. It did not dissolve, like TopGreen™ does. One felt that one was swallowing bits of grass. The after taste was not pleasant and there was grit left in one’s teeth. That was Barlean’s Greens and contains 17 different grasses and extracts. We stopped taking it because of the unpleasant features.
We waited until we could try TopGreen™ to see what the difference would be. We are very pleased and I expect to enjoy this supplement for some time to come. I also feel that you went way out of your way to accommodate us with this introductory order and am sure we will want to order again. — Goshen, IN
I just read your article, Water and Weight advocating the drinking of 2-3 quarts of water and daily walking. As a personal trainer, I wholeheartedly agree. Those two things are most important to obtaining a healthy body weight and keeping it.
When people come to our gym to lose weight, often times they seem to think that exercise alone is the key. I usually advise them to deal with weight loss and improving overall fitness as two separate issues.
No one should begin a vigorous exercise program while they are way over-weight. At worst, that’s an invitation for disaster — discouragement at best. It is much better to walk at first, drink lots of pure water and get to body weight that will allow them to safely and consistently participate in a well-planned exercise program. In my opinion, building lean muscle mass should not be attempted while trying to lose weight. The body requires different nutritional programs for these 2 issues. This is particularly true of those who are very obese. — Sarasota, FL
