— Health from a biblical perspective —

Dear Friend,

In any endeavor, oftentimes it’s the “obvious” that trips us up.  So it is with water’s relationship to sound health.  Many well-intended health seekers give but casual consideration (if any at all) to the quality of the water they drink, bathe in and use to prepare food.  Arguably, in times past, one did not have to concern themselves with the 1000s of manmade concoctions now polluting our environment.  However, natural contaminants have always poised a health risk and should be removed as thoroughly as possible.  Water works like a sponge to absorb bodily toxins. The purer it is — the better it works.

This article deals with basics and provides a primer to readily available equipment to purify your family’s water.  We encourage you to also read Hallelujah’s other articles on this subject.

More About Water

Is it safe to drink?

Many old-timers remember when it was both normal and relatively safe to draw one’s drinking water from a local spring or to drink from a creek; we did it all the time.  Wisdom and prudence now forbid such a practice except under dire circumstances.  Even the “purest” of unfiltered water can be detrimental to health.

To help make the point: geologically, New Mexico is predominately a volcanic state where groundwater can contain higher levels of naturally toxic substances, such as arsenic.  Though a municipal water supply may be rendered bacteriologically safe by the use of chlorine (itself a concern) that doesn’t negate the adverse affects of arsenic.  Nor does it protect consumers against such constituents as heavy metals and other inorganic minerals that can harm and not help.  There are federal standards which municipal water suppliers must adhere to regarding non-bacteriological dissolved solids and a few of the multitude of man-made contaminants.  That doesn’t mean it’s healthful.  Remember, you’re dealing with some of the same government agencies that have been recommending a bogus “Four food-group” diet concept for decades.

In 1990-91 I did a study of Albuquerque’s water and was disturbed by some of the findings.  With its vast array of wells plumbed together like the electrical power grid, homes in upscale neighborhoods share water with the environmentally less desirable areas.  Residents may well have moved from those very same neighborhoods, only to find they’ve not escaped the lesser quality water.  A well that exceeds federal limits for arsenic is simply pumped into the grid, diluting it with water from lesser tainted wells so that the whole grid rises closer to the permissible limit.  Well, you get the idea.  Consider the risks of the average home water well, with no way to know what’s truly in it; not to mention the local spring that “tastes so good”.

It Must Be Cleansed

First we must dispel the idea that by filtering water (by whatever means) something useful will be lost; simply not true. Water filtered to remove substances such as arsenic, PCP, DDT, TCP, etc, could hardly be considered diminished.  The only thing lost will be those constituents harmful to the body, such as inorganic minerals.  Remember, without life-giving enzymes attached to minerals, they’re health harmful.  That’s the kind of calcium which gets deposited where it doesn’t belong and causes arthritis or bone spurs.  Our bodies simply cannot use dissolved rock; it’s dead!  Useful minerals must first pass through the plant kingdom for life-giving enzymes to be attached through the process of photosynthesis.  It is extremely important to drink only pure water; it’s the body’s main nutrient transport medium.  It also acts as a liquid sponge to pick up and remove waste products from the body — but does not remove the body’s mineral reserves as some have suggested.  Let’s now  review the three most readily available types of filters.

Mechanical Filter

Charcoal is the most common material used, often spiked with metallic silver to help reduce the toxic effects of residue build-up.  They do an excellent job in improving taste and odor but are sharply limited in their ability to remove the very tiny dissolved solids.  Though least expensive, they have a considerable downside deriving from their strength — the ability to reduce taste and odor.  Long after a filter is safe to use it can process water that’s palatable and doesn’t offend the olfactory.  I’ve seen them actually double the total dissolved solid count (TDS) without the user realizing its danger because of good taste and smell.  If you’ve wondered what happens to the bacteria killed by chlorine, along with microscopic plant material and other TDS — slice open one of the canister-type filters in use for 6-12 months.  The foul, rotting sludge is sure to cure you of using one but for a brief time.  That’s the reason manufacturers add anti-bacterial silver to them, but having drinking water in contact with metallic silver brings rise to yet other concerns.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

This system is an outgrowth of medical dialysis technology whose cost and effectiveness make it an excellent choice if your situation permits.  Water pressure from the incoming supply presses against a semi-permeable membrane — in principle, not unlike human skin.  Its pores are microscopically small, perhaps only one-micron, allowing water to barely drip from the output side.  Figuratively, it cleans water one molecule at a time.  These systems often have a three-stage filter.  The first, a mechanical one, traps organic matter and larger dissolved solids. The second is an RO and the last, a charcoal unit to “polish” the filtered water.  More elaborate systems also expose the filtered water to ultraviolet light and some systems even ionize it.  Like a mechanical filter, RO requires no electricity but is the least water efficient, wasting 3-5 gallons for each one it filters.  Waste water, exiting through a small hose into the sink or drain, includes residue continuously flushed from the input side of the membrane.  These systems require a steady minimum water pressure of 40 pounds and can be problematical if the raw water is unusually high in TDS.  It works fine in urban areas but may not be satisfactory in areas with fluctuating well-water pressure.

Water Distillers

An old, reliable approach is to boil water, converting it to steam; this leaves the solids behind.  When condensed, steam becomes pure water and it works great.  But as has been said: “Every fly has it’s ointment” — “fly” in this case, the electricity cost and maintenance to remove residue.  The calcification needs to be dissolved by an acid solution such as a vinegar or a muriatic acid soak.  Unvented distillers can also transfer volatile gases to the purified water by the same evap/condensation process, but may not be a bad trade-off to get rid of the really bad stuff.

Bottled Water

The off-the-shelf water would seem to offer a good, though expensive solution at fifty-cents to a dollar per gallon. but again, there’s the “fly”.  That which is labeled “Drinking Water” has typically been run through a mechanical filter to make it taste and smell better but still contains mucho TDS.  The baby-bottle sized containers that so many people nurse are the same thing — just in a more profitable package.  Some have the same TDS as Albuquerque’s water, 120 ppm.  Buying the higher priced distilled water doesn’t necessarily solve the problem either in that suppliers need add only 5% distilled to filtered water in order to legally so label it.

Cellular Hydration

Complicating the matter, much of the water we drink does not actually hydrate our cells.  It passes through with minimal benefit and with some risk.  Much purified water, even  with its fewer contaminant’s, still cannot adequately hydrate our cells, not because of TDS, but its viscosity or thickness.  Think of petroleum oil; it comes in different weights (viscosity). The informed would not add sewing machine oil to a car’s engine.  Nor would one try to use SAE 30 motor oil on intricate equipment.  It would be too thick to flow into it.

So it is with water, even most purified types.  Water molecules tend to hydrostatically bunch together into clumps of five, to even hundreds.  Much of it is just too thick to flow into a cell’s tiny water inlet tubes (aquaporin).  To be able to enter and then hydrate cells, these clumps can now be reduced to a better size.  This is where technology comes in.  Ways and products are being devised to make those molecules line up in single file so that many more can get into our cells where most needed.
