— Health from a biblical perspective —

Dear Health-minded Reader,

Unlike our usual “doctrinal” messages, in this issue we’ve figuratively backed off a few paces to consider an even more basic matter; the very way we think and approach this whole subject of health.  We pray you’ll find it worthy of consideration, even helpful.

Viewing the subject in terms of sports, it might be considered as a marathon rather than a sprint race.  We’re in it for the long haul and therefore need to pace ourselves.  It’s also taken a very long time for our health to become what it is today.  There’s no point in trying change it entirely in 30, 60 or 90 days — regardless of what the tabloids say.

The direction of our efforts is far more important than the speed with which we proceed; get it right at the starting blocks.

Staying Healthy

Three key steps

First, let me reassure you that I am a positive thinker — not a member of the S.N.I.O.P.s (Society for the Negative Influence of Other People).

Many young won’t be interested in this article; in fact, might even find it amusing.  They’re those who, for any number of ill-founded reasons, believe they’ll live long, sickness-free lives.  More accurately, most don’t even think about maintaining health.  If you doubt this, just look at what they eat!  Only those who ‘re convinced of immortality and/or oblivious to the food-health connection could eat the way most do.  Sad to say, their folks and grandparents don’t fare much better.

The question of how to maintain or regain health can be summed up in 3 words: change, change, change.  This assumes that one lives and eats as do most, on the S.A.D (Standard American Diet).  Hold it!  Don’t get mad; I’m just trying to impart some life-saving information to prevent untold suffering, pain and expense.  Now, let me repeat: if we’re eating and living essentially the same as those who are sick, we DO need to change to have any realistic hope of staying healthy.  Bear with me.

1. Change our thinking

Let’s come to grips with the reality that you, like us, have and are being mis-led and mis-informed about food; possibly even mis-diagnosed regarding health.  Unfortunately, we all must recognize and cope with this glut of mis and dis-information oozing from every pore of society; not to imply it’s all malicious.

Our thinking must be remodeled to a point we routinely challenge what “experts”, authorities, and certainly what advertisers tell us; not with the view they’re trying to deceive, but more likely, they have only part of the truth.  This presupposes you have, or will make the decision to assume far more responsibility for your own health.  Even in that regard, we’ve been misled to believe that all matters pertaining to health should be delegated to the credentialed ones; not true.  More accurately, health responsibility falls squarely upon each of our shoulders. Accepting this requires we become better informed; beginning with the general parameters of the whole health issue.  This implies change.

Don’t gloss over what I’ve just said without critical thought.  Implicit is the likely need to change sources of information.  For example, to gain a more accurate appraisal of what’s happening in the Mid-east, we might consult the BBC or Jerusalem Post rather than relying only on our own nation’s news channels.  Similarly, we must go beyond early teachings, consulting a variety of informed sources in order to gain an up to date understanding of health matters.  Each source can contribute a part.

When confronted with information, the first question I ask is, “Who’s behind it?”  Who is the promulgator and what’s their interest; always on the alert for a financial connection.  This is NOT negative thinking; it’s the application of proverbial wisdom exhorting each to be, "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" (Mt 10:16). Across the page from many health articles is an ad for the very same product the article alludes to.  Do you think that’s a coincidence?  In many cases the mind behind the pen or mic has a vested interest; one needs to understand this to meaningfully evaluate information. This applies to a doctor’s counsel and what we write as well.  We need to be wise and alert.

Now consider the health impact of taking, at face value, the profit-motivated food industry’s rationale for our use of their products.  Ponder implications of the meat, dairy and egg industries providing schools with “health” education materials, free, for over 70 years!  The immediate realization is that there are now several generations conditioned by their views; medical professionals and health agencies alike.  Supposing what they’ve been teaching and telling us via sales blurbs is not entirely true; that in fact, what they sell may be good for profit but bad for health?  I further challenge you to determine who’s paid for any given “study” supporting one health issue or another and thus, how much credence to give it.  Today’s ceaseless glut of conflicting info demands our vigilance and thoughtfulness.

2. Change our habits

Much of what we eat and the way we prepare food is controlled by habit.  That’s not to say it’s wrong, only to point out the desirability to critically review both, in light of today’s health understanding.  Yes, I do realize that I’m treading on “holy” ground!  I’m keenly aware that discussing food is far more than a cerebral exercise, involving some of the deepest emotions and unconscious motivations of our being.  Nonetheless, a serious consideration of health demands an examination of what we ingest.

Because the average American has not done their homework — instead accepting, carte blanche what we’ve been taught about diet and health, we’re now experiencing the greatest health challenge this nation has ever confronted.  We have become a desperately overweight and sick people.    Righty assuming more of the blame, it’s partly because of our misplaced priorities, our busyness and laziness.  In effect, this has resulted in most people becoming walking garbage cans.  That’s blunt but true!

So much of what we eat and drink is really quite opposed to what our bodies require to maintain health; not to mention, regain it.  That which the body cannot use and/or eliminate through congested livers, kidneys and equally poisoned skin, gets stored.  Many toxic substances are deposited between the cells or in fat tissue; bad enough if they just added unneeded pounds to stress our every organ, but they lie in wait to foster sickness and disease.  Meanwhile, the effects of mal-nutrition and increasingly fouled and weakening bodies, drives us to ingest additional and possibly more toxic substances; medicines.  Usually, medicines are conscientiously prescribed to “reduce the symptoms of ____”; you fill in the blank.  Note: medications cannot provide health; only a short respite from symptoms of its lack.  Further, they add to the system’s dangerous toxic burden — so goes the downward health spiral.

3. Change our diet

Find out what your body requires to enhance health, then diligently supply it (fresh air, pure water, regular exercise, frequent sunshine, low stress, adequate rest, sound sleep, emotional peace, spiritual soundness and the forty-five basic nutrients).   Give it the best quality of the right kind of nutrients you can afford on a consistent basis.  Start learning and doing today and you’ll be surprised at just how much you will have progressed in a mere 12 months.

That may sound like an overwhelming order, and it would be, tackled all at once.  Make no mistake about it, we’re outlining a major lifestyle change — to be undertaken a little at a time.  A most important step to maintaining good health is to know the right direction, then start.  We also advise putting aside the “diet” mentality; that’s something one gets on and off, especially the take-away kinds.  We advocate an “add-to” approach.  Learn what your body requires for health, then add more of it to your daily intake.  Keep on adding health-enhancing foods, not concentrating too much on getting rid of the bad stuff.  It will gradually fall by the wayside as your body responds to sound nutrition and your taste buds change with your improving health.  It really works!

Assuming only that you’re presently on the S.A.D. — change is the key to getting healthier.  No, not to some fad or popular diet.  Start with the best counsel you can get; like the Bible.  Gradually re-direct the dollars now spent for toxic substances, to quality foods that nourish your body.    Don’t forget; sound health requires much more than good nutrition: air, water, sunlight, etc.  Oh; do forget any idea of a “silver bullet”!

— Letters from readers —

Everything is going well; still juicing and eating real food.  Keep praying and we’ll do the same.  — Port Charlotte, FL.

I am well!  Healed!  Surgery recovery was almost instant!  It was actually miraculous! — Battlefield, MO.

I’ve enjoyed your newsletters, especially the one about colon health; its pH and all.  Though I feel great, I have frequent gas and don’t eat beans or cabbage.  I’m interested in learning more because my dad died of colon cancer. — Virginia Beach, VA

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful newsletters with us.  The Health NEWS has been very educational.  Thanks also for your cards and notes of encouragement to us. — Dillsboro, IN

The book, “Intuitive Eating” was very timely as I have been feeling very poorly; I began to read it the same day it came.  I’d had a virus three times last winter, (unusual for me) and couldn’t seem to completely recover.  My immune system is probably weakened.

I read the book through that week and then did the detox.  In the past I could not detox on all raw fruit and vegetable juices because of an irritable bowed; I couldn’t handle the morning fruit on an empty stomach.  But this approach seemed better so I decided to give it a try and had no problem with my stomach or bowel.  PTL!  The Lord must have have answered the prayers for my healing.  It’s so wonderful!
— Flemington, NJ

Thanks for sharing your questions, concerns, suggestions and victories with us and the readership; wish we could publish all your letters.  Let’s hear from more of you who are now reading “Intuitive Eating”.
