Twenty-five ways God-the-Holy-Spirit
is at work in the Church today


He convicts of sin — John 16:8.  When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

He baptizes us — 1Cor 12:13.  For we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

He regenerates us — John 3:5,6,8. Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.  6. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.  8. The wind blows wherever it pleases.  You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.  So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

He lives within us — John 14:16,17.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you for ever ... 17. the Spirit of truth.  The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.  But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Rom 8:9a — You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.
1Cor 3:16 — Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
1Cor 6:19 — Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?

He fills and leads us —  Luke 4:1. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert
Acts 10:19,20 — While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.  20. So get up and go downstairs.  Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."
Rom 8:14 — For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

He sanctifies us — 1Cor 6:11.  And that is what some of you were.  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
2Thess 2:13 — But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

He is the channel of divine revelation — John 16:13.  (when) the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
1Cor 2:10a —but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.

He Illuminates our spirit and mind — 1Cor 2:11b-13.  no-one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.  12. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.  13. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

He anoints us — 1John 2:20,27. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.  27. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.  But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit — just as it has taught you, remain in him.

He teaches us — John 14:26.  But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
1Cor 2:10b — The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

He enables us — Exod 31:1,3. Then the LORD said to Moses, "See I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3. and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts.

He guarantees our future —  2Cor 1:22. (He) set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Eph 1:13b,14 — Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14. who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

He is our source of power — Acts 6:8.  Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.
1Cor 2:4 — My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,
Eph 3:16 — I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
2Tim 1:7 — For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

He provides us with spiritual gifts —  Cor 12:7-11. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  8. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10. to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  11. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

He prays for us — Rom 8:26.  In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

He guards us — 2Ti 1:14. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

He strengthens us — Ps 27:1. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Php 4:13 — I can do everything through him who gives me strength ...

He is our source of liberty — 2Cor 3:17.  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Rom 8:2 —  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

He is our source of fellowship — 2Cor 13:14.  May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Phil 2:1 — If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion ...


He is our source of unity — Eph 4:3b,4.  keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  4. There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to one hope when you were called

He frees us from indwelling sin — Rom 8:1-5. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.  3. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:  4. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.   5. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

He builds our character — Gal 5:16.  Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
Php 1:6 — being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Rom 8:29 — For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

He transforms us — 2Cor 3:18.  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Eph 4:24 — And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

He produces fruit through us — Gal 5:22,23.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23. gentleness and self-control.  Against such things there is no law.
Eph 5:9 —  The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;
John 15:15 — "I am the vine; you are the branches.  If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

He calls and ordains servants (ministers) —  Acts 13:2-4. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."  3. So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.  4. The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.
Rom 1:1a — Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle ...
Eph 4:11-13 — It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12. to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13. until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fulness of Christ.
