— Spiritual food for today —

“Trust & Obey ...

... there is no other way.” My goodness, such a simple and childlike hymn verse.  Indeed, for over a century, Sammis and Towner’s, “Trust and Obey” has been traditional in many  Sunday schools.  Yet, how much more meaningful its essential doctrine as we approach the opposite end of life.  As kids, who of us really knew what it meant to trust and obey God?  How could we possibly have realized in those early years that we were being handed golden nuggets of the Christian faith?  Little did we know that, should our theology develop no further, we had received the means of access to all Father God offers His family.

Think about it.  If ALL we knew was to implicitly trust scripture (especially the New Testament) our lives would be transformed.  Biblical faith alone sets a person distinctly apart from the crowd.  Add to that grace-enabled-faith — earnest obedience, and life can become wholly at odds with the prevailing, “My Way,” Sinatra style of self-centered living.  Such a life conflicts with the morally plunging culture and can thereby be quite challenging.  It readily pierces the smiling veneer of Satan’s unwitting hosts, inviting hostility.  All the more reason believers be fully clothed in Ephesians-six armor.  But the battle isn’t against our fellow man (or the government).  It’s waged knee-to-carpet in the unseen realm, the heavenlies — by faith though obedience, and by prayer.

Trust-and-obey!  There’s really NO other way for professors to become possessors or victims to be victors.  We need to stand firmly on the Word at all times.  What’s the worst that can happen? you lose your worldly possessions? your health? friends? job? business and reputation?  Yes, you could even die.  But the flip side? ... no more sickness, suffering sorrow, trials, bills or conflict (politics or McYuccos either).  “Only” Jesus!  Now, should you not crash, burn or perish ... GROWTH!  You advance spiritually.  Your confidence in God grows, you get bolder in your faith, you become more like Christ; closer to the model for eternal Kingdom living.  In fact, you delight the Lord, Who is further glorified through you.  "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him" (2Chron 16:9).  Oh, just ... DO it!
