“Peculiar” People

At one time, being so called might have been offensive, but for we believers, it’s now a badge of distinction; peculiar, connoting something unique, special or distinctive.  First-Peter 2:9,10 declares born-agains to be blessedly so because our sin-caused death sentence has been commuted. As recipients of the Father’s mercy, we’re now a transformed, formally death-bound corp, being molded by the Word and Spirit into the image of Christ; part of God’s kingdom vanguard here on earth.  Selah.

“How,” you might ask, “can we represent the unseen Almighty in our everyday lives?”  One way is to proclaim His mercy and goodness by living in a state of joyous praise.  Danita is an example; a 50-year-old born-again bundle of joyful praise who works at a local cafe.  Without any distinctive Christian pins, badges or clothing, she all but bursts with a joy entirely at odds with the disintegrating world about her.  When asked of its source ... out it comes: praises unto God.  She’s a living tract and an inspiration to 20-year-olds trying to keep pace (to us also).

Just as Danita exudes the love of God, so should all, and it’s not an external we can don ... like a hat.  His Spirit indwells every born-again (Acts 2:38) so wherever they go, so goes God.  He inhabits His people.  It’s why, even though surrounded by agents and works of the enemy, Spirit-filled persons are enthusiastic (en theos: God within).  Being filled with the Spirit (as was table-waiter, Stephen; see Acts 6:5,8) requires spending time with Him in daily prayer, study and worship.  Intimacy.

Spirit saturated believers don’t need printed tracts; THEY are the tracts.  Wherever they go (though often unaware) they take life and light into dead and dark places.  In this regard, they are “peculiar.”  The love of God veritably oozes from them.  They are distinctive because of their brightness, enthusiasm and obvious joy.  We guarantee, if you enter that cafe when Danita is on duty, you will not overlook her.  She’s a joy and a delight that speaks volumes about the love of God.  She shows forth the praises of Him who called her out of darkness, into His marvellous light.  Once a “no people,” she is now animated by God’s Spirit.  Peculiar!
