“Change!” “Change!”

It’s without satisfaction we refer to last January’s Field Report (Get Out of Debt!): “Winds of a perfect monetary storm are churning and the world is poised for an economic tsunami that could sweep the globe and reduce this nation to poverty” (FR14-1, pg 1).  We earnestly pray that warning is not entirely accurate.

It’s now a year later and the world and this nation are facing the most severe economic down-turn in 80 years.  Businessmen and others everywhere are scrambling to keep their doors open.  Countless factories, stores, banks, dealers, shops, papers and home owners have already gone under (even the nation of Iceland) and over 2-million Americans have lost their jobs.  With poor holiday sales and the lift of Christmas behind, it appears things will get decidedly worse.  Many more stores and entire Malls are expected to be shuttered and a whole new round of mortgage foreclosures anticipated. The world is reeling at the sudden and shocking changes in nations, systems and institutions once considered stable.  Calls for change reverberate around the globe and in the church.  The desperation of the Acts 2:37 question, “What shall we do?” can everywhere be heard.  People are seeking answers, relief ... and leadership.

The stage is set.  Historically, it’s a climate in which society’s extreme elements with rosy panaceas take the spotlight; a time when people risk liberty and freedom for “change.”  History also reminds that this environment stirs evil leaders to corresponding works.  Even as we write, ominous prophetic rumblings are discernable in Rome, France, Germany and Russia ... while America and churchdom lurch to the far liberal left.  It’s a time of shaking sifting, sorting and of great danger for the entire world; church included.  It’s also a time for acute vigilance.

But there’s hope in these “birth pangs” of our full redemption.  The true Savior will soon appear!  We can almost hear the apostle Paul: “stand fast” in the faith" (1Cor 16:13); "in the liberty" (Gal 5:1); "in one spirit" (Php 1:27) and "in the Lord" (Php 4:1, etc.).  We too urge you to be steadfast in your prayer, worship, Bible study and obedience to God.  He WILL see all of us through.
