Talking With God

As a very young and unchurched child, I remember well a hymn my mother often sang: “In the Garden.”  It's wonderfully simplistic, hauntingly beautiful and to this day, touches me deeply.  Here's its refrain:

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

Curiously sweet, on April 7, 1976, while tearfully sitting in a garden and still lost as lost can be, God answered my desperate prayer.  In four words, spoken as though He stood beside me, my life was revolutionized.  Quietly, yet startlingly, He declared:

“You are my son.”

However, that divine and precious dispatch did not quench my 3-day flood of tears; indeed, they gushed all the more. The huge difference was their source ... from despair and defeat ... to relief, joy, hope and astonishment.  GOD spoke to me!  God SPOKE to me!!  God spoke TO ME!!!  I was ecstatic ... astounded, and still walk in daily amazement.

Dear friend,  He will speak to ANY, every and ALL who place their wholehearted trust in Him through Christ Jesus.  He "talks" to us through scripture; through others and by way of His indwelling Spirit.  His great aim and delight is to reveal Himself to all mankind, beginning by embossing Himself on creation. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Rom 1:20).  By way of further introduction, He actually walked amongst us as the God-man: JESUS.  That was GOD!  Who, at one point said to His disciples: “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (Jn 14:9b).

Garden to garden; from the cool of the day in Eden, to the agony of Gethsemane, God has has sought communion with us all.  On a rugged cross in Galilee, His sinless blood still records a passion for all mankind.  It entreats:

I love you!  I LOVE you!!  I love YOU!!!  Will you see me?  Will you hear me?
I forgive you. I want to speak with you. Anywhere, anytime.  Let's have a talk.
