Jehovah Jireh

“Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen” (Gen 22:14). This is the Bible’s only reference to Jehovah-Jireh.  It’s a symbolic name given to Mount Moriah by Abraham to memorialize God’s intervention on his behalf, by providing a substitute for the imminent sacrifice of his son, Isaac.  God saw the man of faith's need and met it.

Under the New Covenant, our Father still sees and meets the needs of His own and reassures of this truth.  “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19). We take every opportunity to share about the generous nature of our God, capsulized in this verse.  He is lavish and faithful with His endless provision; always searching for those who seek Him, and “... they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing” (Ps 34:10b).

Fortunately, early in our Christian walk, we chose to trust Him as fully with our lives and needs as understanding and courage would permit.  Though we’ve played a pitiably poor part, from the outset, our Provider has been inordinately gracious.  Not only to us, but to (most) all whom we’ve known to take God’s Word at face value.  To be sure, there are exceptions; those, seemingly far more worthy of divine provision, but have found it elusive.  Only God truly knows why, for He alone holds the master key to the secret places of our hearts.  But we do know for sure that He doesn’t play favorites.  He is impartial.

Dear friend, as you can plainly see, there is nothing in this world that can be depended upon for lasting stability.  Early on it seemed that product brands such as Sal Hepatica, Sloan’s Liniment and Studebaker were forever.  Nor did it occur that penny candy, 3-cent postage, 5-cent Coke, 10-cent milk or 16-cent gasoline would one day be LONG gone.  But they are.  Moreover, everything still seen is on its way out, including this entire world and all its systems.  They’re toast!

God’s Word is the only secure anchor for all, and He provides for the redeemed who simply place their trust in Him.  If your world seems shaky these days, grab ahold of the Living Word “and wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times” (Isa 33:6a).
