Doing without Dollars

How to get by when money fails

That America’s currency will fail is not a matter of “if,” but when ... be it 17 months or 7 years — it’s fate being sealed in 1913 when the Fed (Federal Reserve Banking System) was created.  With currency control placed within reach of politicos, the corrosive and potentially fatal economic pathogen, “inflation,” had been loosed into the U.S. monetary system.  Here’s how it can eventually kill the dollar:

Prior to then, inflation was nil, so a dollar minted in 1800 would buy the same amount a century later.  Not so since 1913 when $5 would get: 15# of potatoes, 10# of flour, 5# of sugar, 5# of chuck roast, 3# of round steak, 3# of rice, 2# of cheese, 2# of bacon, 1# of butter, 1# of coffee, 2 loaves of bread, 4 quarts of milk and a dozen eggs.  Now, a decent loaf of bread itself costs that much.

Since 1783

A dollar has lost 90% of its value; 80% since 1971 when cut loose from gold and 25% of that since 2002.  A thousand dollars stashed in 1971, is now worth only $185.  Also, today’s inflation-adjusted paycheck of $455, would have been $2459.46 back then.  Currency devaluation is the inevit-able result of inflation, but what actually causes it?  Printing worthless money rather than earning it (QE).  It’s a political rather than economic decision; in effect, legalized theft.

Every such empty dollar poured into the existing money pool dilutes the whole, thus taking more to buy the same goods.  Tricked by the distracting term inflation, dollar devaluation makes it seem prices are going up.  It’s really a tax with the appealing benefit of also deflating federal debt.  Being unrestrained by the former Gold Standard, politicians are free to promise vote-garnering entitlements to be funded by non-existent dollars. This money must come from taxes, borrowing or printing. The politically more appealing latter two are called: issuing Treasury Notes and quantitative easing (QE).  “Debt” by any other name.  The real down-side of QE is it can cause a currency to collapse.  If not held in check, inflation can suddenly rocket out of control.  The tragic game is then soon over with social chaos and poverty the winners.

Were the buck not buoyed by China’s (diminishing) purchases of T-Notes, it would likely have already tanked.  All that’s needed for a real crisis is a better way for nations to secure their wealth.  Trillions in socialistic subsidies are racing off presses in an effort to prop up a zombie economy, whereas unfettered capitalism allows market forces to restore economic vigor.  Ominously, failed 1930s policies are driving America towards depression; debt-caused deflation, being another economic peril.

What’s a Christian to do?

Assuredly, the Bible does not suggest we become political or social activists to save the dollar, country, America’s traditions or former glory.  Nor does Scripture urge us to begin hoarding, buying weapons or building a self-sufficient compound in which to retreat ... absolutely none of those Y2K-type acts of fear and unbelief.

Instead, the Spirit points us to Jesus, the Word.  Yes, do become a Spirit empowered Kingdom activist.  Do store up God’s life-sustaining Word in your heart.  By all means, put on your divine weaponry and take up your soldiering responsibilities in His army.  Do stick your chin out and boldly declare: “In God I trust!” Then, courageously live it out; walk the talk to the glory of God.

We can live boldly and victoriously in spite of adverse circumstances and children will be vastly more secure in the coming turmoil if godly parents wean them from worldly ways — to dependence upon their Creator.  We serve a God of unlimited resource and might and He’s placed His Spirit within us.  He also promises never to leave, neglect or forsake ... and His love and grace are sufficient.

Our almighty God reigns and still will when the “almighty” dollar fails.  We need to trust Him implicitly with our whole heart, mind and very life.  Cling to Him by grace-enabled faith! Lay hold of His promises, abide in His love and trust in His Word.  "Seek not as the Gentiles, but as the redeemed of God" (Mt 6:25-34).  You’re an overcomer in Christ Jesus!
