Suddenly!

... everything changes.

No doubt you are aware of just how quickly things can change.  To cite a grievous current example: Japan. In a mere matter of hours and days, one of the most advanced nations on the planet has been brought to her knees.  Many thousands have lost their lives as the combined forces of an historic earthquake, tsunami and multiple nuclear reactor failures, devastated the landscape.

It all happened very suddenly.

In America, on the morning of September 15, 2008, a presidential candidate reassured that the nation’s economy was “sound.”  However, that VERY afternoon, it took an historic nosedive that nearly collapsed the planet’s economy and from which neither nation nor world has recovered. As usual, most economists were “taken by surprise.”

It happened so suddenly.

On November 2, 2008, Americans did what fed-up citizens worldwide have historically done ... vote for a political extremist idealogue promising “change.”  Then, suddenly, everything began to change ... very much for the worse.  An Islamic-leaning, socialist/Marxist faction seized control of the nation and is rapidly embedding an air of tyranny.

Suddenly! American freedom is in jeopardy.

It was but a few weeks ago citizens of Tunisia rose up against tyranny of its ruling minority.  Then, suddenly, the entire Mid-east was ablaze in unrest, uprisings and civil war.  Borders, sea gates, shipping lanes and the Suez canal, once considered secure, are no longer so and former national alliances are changing almost weekly.  A Mid-east war now looms ever bigger on the prophetic radar as the Bible's  "King of the South" arrogantly "pushes" against God’s chosen instrument of certain justice; the "King of the North" (Dan 11:40-44).

It’s all happening very suddenly.

But “suddenly” isn’t a new concept. It’s just that we all tend to think in linear terms.  We assume that tomorrow will be the same as today; that next week will be like this one and next year predictable ... so we live accordingly.  The truth is that we live in a non-linear world of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, tornados, hurricanes, floods, droughts, plagues, famines ... plus all the man-made horrors.  Friend, life is inherently unpredictable.  Many lose out and miss opportunity, even perish eternally, because of so wrongly perceiving reality.  That’s why it’s well to ponder the saying: “Today is that tomorrow you were going to do something about, yesterday.”

Things can change suddenly.

As I presently understand Scripture, America’s greatness is headed for history’s ash bin.  But before that, the “almighty dollar” is destined to become the mini-buck among world currencies as our living standard continues to plummet toward Great Depression levels.  However, without a doubt, God's infallible Word assures that eternity will one day stare each of us in the face.  Individually, we will stand at a heavenly bar before the Great Judge of the universe to receive our just rewards.

In view of these realities, it behooves us to be good stewards of today.  It could be our last, even if we are "bullet-proof" sixteen-year-old athletes.

And it could happen suddenly.
